San Diego Tennis Weather — Nearly Perfect, Every Morning

San Diego has the best year-round tennis weather in the country — it's not really a debate. But "almost always perfect" still leaves room for June Gloom mornings, offshore wind events, and the occasional week of winter rain. Playable catches the exceptions so you can count on the rule.

Know what to expect before you plan your week.

🌊

Spring

Good

Excellent — but June Gloom arrives in May

March and April are flawless: 62–72°F, low humidity, minimal wind. By late May the marine layer starts its seasonal push inland, leaving coastal courts damp in the mornings even without rain. Inland courts (Rancho Bernardo, Chula Vista) see it less. Playable catches the marine layer moisture in its precipitation tracking.

Summer

Good

June Gloom, then perfect from July on

June is the year's trickiest month in San Diego — the marine layer is thickest, mornings can be cool and foggy, and courts near the coast can stay damp. By July the pattern breaks: skies clear by mid-morning, temperatures are ideal (70–80°F), and rain is essentially zero. August and September are as good as tennis weather gets.

Fall

Excellent

The long run of near-perfect conditions

October through November is exceptional. The marine layer retreats, Santa Ana wind events can occasionally spike conditions (watch Playable's wind flags in October), and temperatures settle into the low-to-mid 70s for weeks at a time. This is when San Diego's outdoor courts fill up.

🌧️

Winter

Good

Still good — just watch the rain weeks

December through February is mild (55–65°F mornings) and mostly dry. San Diego averages about 10 inches of rain annually, and most of it comes in a handful of concentrated systems January through March. Between those systems, winter mornings are outstanding. Playable will flag the wet stretches clearly.

FAQ

Common questions about San Diego tennis weather

What time window does Playable check for San Diego tennis weather? +
Playable evaluates the 7 to 9 AM window, checking temperature, wind speed, and the 12 hours of rainfall before your start time. In San Diego, the marine layer and June Gloom moisture are the most common variables to catch.
Does June Gloom affect San Diego tennis courts? +
Yes. The marine layer from late May through June can deposit light moisture on court surfaces overnight without generating measurable radar rainfall. Playable's precipitation tracking captures this low-level moisture and flags borderline conditions on marine layer mornings near the coast.
What wind speed makes tennis unplayable in San Diego? +
Winds at 7 mph or above are flagged. October Santa Ana wind events are the main risk — offshore winds can gust much higher and arrive quickly. The rest of the year San Diego is one of the calmest tennis markets in the country.
What temperature is too hot or too cold for tennis in San Diego? +
Playable flags above 90°F and below 40°F. San Diego rarely hits either threshold — that's the point. The city sits comfortably between those limits almost year-round, which is why it's the benchmark for great tennis weather.
Is Playable free to use for San Diego players? +
Yes. Playable is completely free, requires no account or sign-up, and works directly in your browser. Enter your court location and get a 7-day playability forecast instantly.
